Scientific Lecture: “The Impact of Climate Change and Sea-Level Changes During the Late Quaternary on Coastal Erosion and Sedimentary Systems in the Southern Mediterranean”

As part of the scientific collaboration between the Faculty’s academic departments and its commitment to linking scientific research with environmental and community issues, the Community and Environmental Service Team of the Department of Environmental Science and Natural Resources participated in the scientific lecture organized by the Department of Geology, entitled:

“The Impact of Climate Change and Sea-Level Changes During the Late Quaternary on Coastal Erosion and Sedimentary Systems in the Southern Mediterranean.”

The lecture was delivered by Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Yousif Mrehil, and was attended by department heads, faculty members, students, and researchers.

Community and Environmental Service Team Participation

As part of the lecture activities, the Community and Environmental Service Team presented an awareness video entitled:

“From the Geological Past to the Reality of Jabal Nafusa.”

The video takes viewers from scientific evidence of climate change to real-life observations from our local region, including the drying of springs and the occurrence of wadi flows outside their usual seasonal periods. It highlights how climate change translates into everyday challenges affecting natural resources and livelihoods across the Jabal Nafusa region.

The team also distributed a scientific questionnaire to attendees aimed at assessing the impact of climate change on natural resources in the region and collecting perspectives from the local community. This initiative reflects the Department’s commitment to connecting scientific research with community needs.

This activity is part of the Department’s ongoing efforts to:

  • Strengthen scientific partnerships with other academic departments.
  • Activate the role of scientific research in serving the community and environment.
  • Engage students and researchers in addressing real-world environmental challenges.
  • Promote a culture of quality and continuous improvement in academic and community work.

Special Thanks

Special thanks are extended to the Department of Geology for its kind invitation, with particular appreciation to Teaching Assistant Iman Abuktheif, as well as to Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Yousif Mrehil for his valuable lecture, and to everyone who contributed to the success of this distinguished scientific event.
