Scientific Seminar on “The Power of Genetic Fingerprinting in Human Identification”

The Faculty of Science – Gharyan, under the auspices of the Research and Consultancy Department, the Community Service and Environment Office, and the Department of Zoology, organized a distinguished scientific seminar entitled:

“The Power of Genetic Fingerprinting in Human Identification”

under the slogan: “Your Identity is in Your Fingerprint.”

The seminar aimed to raise awareness about modern genetic fingerprinting techniques and their vital role in serving society, particularly in humanitarian cases within Libya.

The event began with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran, followed by the national anthem. The Dean of the Faculty of Science, Dr. Omar Abudina, delivered a welcoming speech emphasizing the importance of the seminar’s topic and the College’s role in supporting scientific research.

The scientific program included two outstanding lectures:

  • The first lecture was delivered by Ms. Zainab Mohammed Al-Henshiri, Assistant Professor in the Department of Zoology, focusing on DNA. She discussed its discovery, structure, function, and the latest scientific applications of this vital molecule.
  • The second lecture was presented by Mr. Ashraf Saleh Abualeid, Director of the Genetic Fingerprinting Laboratories at the General Authority for Research and Identification of Missing Persons. He showcased the latest research techniques used in DNA analysis, explaining how these methods enhance identification of unknown individuals. He also called for strengthened cooperation between academic institutions and applied organizations to support research projects that serve society and open new scientific horizons for students and researchers.

The seminar witnessed distinguished attendance, including the Vice Dean for Academic Affairs, faculty members from the Faculty of Science – Gharyan, the Faculty of Law, and the Faculty of Health Sciences, as well as representatives from the Internal Security Agency, students from the Faculty of Science, and preparatory medical students. The discussions centered on the practical applications of genetic fingerprinting and its role in serving society. At the conclusion of the seminar, certificates of appreciation were awarded to the speakers in recognition of their scientific contributions.

Special thanks and appreciation go to the student talent team and the Student Union of the Faculty of Science – Gharyan for their outstanding support in ensuring the success of the event.
