World Environment Day Celebration – Gharyan University 2025

Theme: “Overcoming Plastic Pollution”

On a remarkable awareness-raising day, students, academics, environmental activists, and civil society representatives gathered this morning, Monday, 16 June 2025, at the Faculty of Science Theater – Gharyan University, to celebrate World Environment Day. The event was organized jointly by Tamkeen Organization for Community Development, the Faculty of Science – Gharyan University, and the Environmental Affairs Office – Gharyan, under the generous sponsorship of Gharyan University.

The event began with opening remarks from the organizers, the University President, and the Dean of the Faculty of Science, all emphasizing the importance of environmental awareness and the role of academic and community institutions in addressing the challenge of plastic pollution.

Distinguished scientific contributions were presented by students and faculty members from the following academic departments:

  • Department of Ecology and Natural Resources
  • Department of Chemistry
  • Department of Botany
  • Department of Zoology
  • Department of Geology

Additionally, Tamkeen Organization, Tech Spark Organization, Al-Barari Organization, the Environmental Affairs Office, and the Libya Scouts and Guides Association delivered informative presentations, featuring awareness campaigns and technological initiatives to reduce plastic dependency and promote sustainable solutions.

The event concluded with an extensive panel discussion including representatives from the academic departments, providing an opportunity for open dialogue with the audience, creating an interactive and participatory environment.

The event produced the following recommendations:

  1. Integrate the topic of plastic pollution into relevant university activities and courses.
  2. Strengthen collaboration between the university and civil society to organize continuous environmental awareness campaigns.
  3. Encourage scientific research on plastic pollution and its impact on soil and the environment.
  4. Launch recycling initiatives within the university and local community.
  5. Reduce the use of single-use plastics in educational institutions and public facilities.
  6. Support student innovation in waste reduction and its transformation into useful resources.

At the conclusion of the celebration, certificates of appreciation were distributed to all participants and collaborators in recognition of their outstanding efforts and effective contribution to the success of this important environmental occasion.
